Top 10 countries with the best diet in the world
A global study, published in the Lancet on Global Health in February of last year, assessed the quality of diets in 197 countries and found an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables worldwide.
Countries with the healthiest diets are respectively Chad, Sierra Leone, Mali, Gambia, Uganda, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Israel and Somalia.
countries that have obtained the rates higher for unhealthy foods are Azerbaijan, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Heilongjiang, a province of China, Iceland, Belarus, Lithuania, the United States of America and Russia.
As part of the study, an international team of researchers analyzed data on consumption of 17 foods and obesity-related nutrients and major diseases like heart disease, cerebral vascular accident (stroke), the type 2 diabetes, and cancers related to key food produts.
They looked at changes in diet between 1990 and 2010 in countries around the world. They looked at three different eating habits and assigned each a score.
The first was based on 10 healthy foods: fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, milk, total polyunsaturated fatty acids, fish, omega-3 and fiber.
The second was an unfavorable regime based on seven unhealthy products. unprocessed meats, processed meats, sugary drinks, saturated fatty acids, trans-fat, dietary cholesterol and salt
the third was an overall diet pattern on based on all 17 food groups.
Researchers assessed the differences by country, age, **** and national income of each country and gave a score between 0 -. 100, with a higher score indicating a healthier diet
They found that high-income countries are eating more healthy foods than low-income countries, scoring 2.5 points higher on average. However, overall, they had significantly poor diets due to high consumption of unhealthy foods - the average difference in the score was -33 points.
According to the study, on average, older people and women seem to have a better diet.
